The purpose of the Canine Training Program at a Jail is to provide inmates with social and vocational skills to enhance job skills for successful reentry into the community. The canine will receive quality care, training and socialization. The canine will be trained in accordance with the recommendations and position of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. (https://avsab.org/resources/position-statements/) The ultimate goal of the program is for the canine to be adopted into a permanent home. This program is in collaboration with participating shelters and their appointed trainers.
The Jail will have a Canine Training Program Committee (CTPC) that includes (insert their committee members here) as well as at least one representative from the shelter. This committee will meet at least monthly to review progress and address any concerns.
Qualified inmate canine trainers will be reviewed and interviewed by the Canine Training Program Committee. Selected inmates will successfully complete Pup Partners SPIRIT™ Dog Basic Behavior Modification Training prior to receiving a dog.
Training4K9s and Exceeding Expectations Pet Services training coordinators will provide training to the members of the Canine Training Program Committee and the inmate trainers. This training will be in accordance with the recommendations and standards of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. The canine is expected to remain at the Jail for 8 to 12 weeks. This term may vary according to the progress and needs of each canine. Assessments will be made by the trainer, the veterinarian or veterinary technician if required, and the CTPC. Training4K9s or Exceeding Expectations will test the canine using the “Canine Good Citizen” criteria. The canine and trainer will work towards meeting these test markers. At the conclusion of the training, the shelter will pick up the canine and any designated medication.
